We believe that all women, regardless of age, ethnicity and social background should have the opportunity to have a positive birth experience and the support around breastfeeding. In the past it was more common for a mother or grandmother to support a woman through this time, as it still is in many parts of the world. These women were and are not trained, but experienced in birth, life and offered nurturing and support. All the women we support are not in this position when they come to us, and often due to a multitude of reasons, the family and community support may no longer there.

Before, during and after the birth it is first and foremost a volunteer doula's presence that should make the woman feel safe, supported and heard. Whilst we recognize that to be a volunteer doula, it may be easier for those who have the experience of giving birth, breastfeeding and rearing children, we also realize that there are some women who do not have this experience who can be wonderful Doulas.
Our volunteers go through an intense and comprehensive training package to give them many of the tools to enable them to fulfill this role. However we recognize that being a volunteer doula is an experiential journey, with highs as well as sometimes lows, but is always a route to development, be it personal or professional. Our volunteers are continuously encouraged to access the free ongoing training offered and are supervised and mentored whilst supporting a women, to ensure her needs are met, along with the woman’s. If you feel you have the passion and dedication to enable you to fulfill this role, please go to our 'Become a Doula' page to find out more.
